I had same problem, was upgrading from earlier version Longhorn, I booted into that version and removed the CD/DVD driver and rebooted then it saw the DVD player and installed. Took me 5 or 6 times to actually install, now cannot register it cause IE cannot hit the internet Good luck!

Upgrading from one build of Vista to another is not recommended and not supported. With Beta 2 only upgrades from XP to Vista are supported. It is likely that upgrading from Beta 2 to RC1 will not be supported either.

Colin.
While installing Vista Beta 2 in an upgrade situation is not recommended, not supported, and will cause data loss, hours of sleeplessness and foot corns, wouldn't it be prudent for some people, and by that I mean people like you, Tom, Andre, etc... (those who unlike me seem to have a clue) to attempt upgrades so that the fiasco scenarios can be reported to MSFT? And just take that a little farther: isn't this a great learning experience for MSFT regarding the actual versus the percieved ability of the average Windows user? I would think that, while mind-numbingly exhaustive, actually supporting a user such as myself in an upgrade scenario would be offset by the knowledge gained.

No. This is a beta test to benefit the future of Vista. It is not about us.
There will not be any supported scenarios in which anyone will ever obtain a beta copy of Vista and then upgrade it to the retail edition over time.
All supported upgrade scenarios have to be thoroughly tested by MS before PSS can support customers making such an upgrade. For one thing, there is no chance that upgrades from build 5384 to build 54xx to build 55xx can ever receive such testing. There is no point in concerning ourselves with this kind of upgrade if MS will never use the findings anyway. The current testing at MS is focused on upgrading from XP to Vista because that is what can be supported by PSS.
Consider the upgrade scenario for moving up from Win95 to XP. It is not supported from the Win95 desktop (if you try you get "Upgrade is not an Option"). Yet you can boot from the XP Upgrade cd and perform a clean install of XP by simply providing the Win95 cd when asked for proof of ownership of a previous version of Windows. Why? Because Win95 had reached End Of Support before XP came out and MS did not throughly test the upgrade scenario for a no-longer supported product. PSS could not support the upgraders. MS did not mind Win95 owners taking advantage of the $100 savings by not having to buy XP full, but they could not guarantee complete success in an upgrade in place scenario.
It is likely to be the same for Win98/ME users when Vista releases since those products will reach End Of Support four weeks from now. (XP Gold is already out of support and XP SP1 will reach EOS on Patch Tuesday in October).

Just done a successful upgrade from Windows XP SP2-x32 to Vista-x32 on a Fujitsu-Siemens laptop. Original DVD RW used was faulty but a new DVD+RW cured that problem. Second time I also removed all the programs the update said would not work. Remove Daemon tools V4 if installed as its hard to remove on Vista. (and it doesn't work).

I suggest that you go ahead with a clean installation on a separate drive or partition and report the upgrade failure via the feedback link. I am assuming that you were not attempting to upgrade your production or primary home installation of XP (don't!).
